The person or company that takes the physical artwork home does not automatically receive every copyright or reuse right connected to the design. Physical ownership and intellectual-property rights are separate questions.
For UAE projects, Federal Decree-Law No. 38 of 2021 governs copyright and neighbouring rights.
This article is general commercial guidance, not legal advice.
First Decide Who Receives the Physical Piece
The contract should state whether the completed artwork goes to:
- brand;
- agency;
- venue;
- event guest;
- charity;
- artist;
- another nominated party.
For a live mural on a client's wall, the physical position is obvious but the rights still need clarification.
Then Clarify Economic Rights
Questions can include whether the client may:
- reproduce the artwork in campaign materials;
- print it on products;
- adapt it;
- recreate it at another location;
- use it in paid advertising;
- license it to third parties.
These rights should be stated in writing; payment for the physical piece should not be treated as an automatic transfer of every right.
Event Photography Is a Separate Use
A brand may need permission to photograph or film:
- artist;
- artwork;
- creative process.
The contract can address campaign documentation while keeping broader reproduction rights clear.
Live Guest Products May Have Different Terms
A personalised tote or bottle given to a guest is different from a hero artwork developed for the campaign.
The agreement can define:
- rights in the base design;
- personal guest use;
- artist portfolio use;
- brand campaign use.
Reuse Across Locations Needs Explicit Treatment
If the client wants the same design repeated at multiple stores or events, clarify that before the first activation.
A single commissioned design does not automatically settle future production fees, adaptation or rollout rights.
Keep Moral Rights in Mind
UAE copyright law also recognises moral rights. Legal advice may be needed for complex waivers, modifications or commercial exploitation.
Put the Rights in the Agreement
Before production, identify:
- physical owner;
- copyright owner;
- brand usage licence;
- duration;
- territories;
- media;
- adaptation or reuse;
- artist portfolio rights.

For a commercial activation, the practical contract should still state the specific licence, reproduction, adaptation, campaign, territory and reuse rights the parties intend. This section is commercial guidance, not legal advice.
Clarify Rights Before the Event
Impact Murals can define the intended creative deliverables and commercial-use questions for the project agreement. For complex rights transfers, both parties should obtain appropriate UAE legal advice.
