Potentially, but it should be agreed without being assumed.
A brand may own the physical mural or commissioned piece at the first location without automatically owning every economic right in the creative work. UAE copyright law protects artistic works and states that transfer of an original copy does not by itself assign the author's economic rights unless otherwise agreed. The practical answer therefore depends on the commission terms, any licence or assignment, and the way the brand wants to reuse the work.
This page is general commercial guidance, not legal advice.
Decide What “Reuse” Actually Means
There is a material difference between:
- painting the same composition again on another wall;
- adapting the composition to a new wall proportion;
- reusing one visual element as part of a wider family;
- reproducing the artwork digitally in marketing or graphics;
- commissioning a new piece that follows the same artistic system.
A multi-site brief should identify which of these is expected without treating them as one undefined right.
Design Adaptation Is Usually Part of a Rollout
Even where reuse is permitted, different wall dimensions, openings, furniture, sightlines and local context mean a direct copy may not be the best production solution. A good rollout system defines what must stay consistent and what the artist can adapt.
That can include a fixed palette, key motif or visual language while allowing the composition to change with each site.
Agree the Number and Type of Locations
If a rollout is likely from the beginning, say so during the first commission. The commercial structure can then reflect the intended number of locations, whether new design work is required for each one and whether the artist is expected to execute, supervise or simply license the adapted work.
Future locations that were not contemplated originally may require a new agreement.
Separate Reuse Rights From Production Fees
Permission to reuse a design and the cost of producing the next mural are different commercial questions. A second site may involve new artwork adaptation, travel, access, materials and execution even where the underlying use of the concept has already been agreed.
Keeping those items separate makes a multi-site quotation easier to understand.
What if the Original Agreement Is Silent?
Do not assume the answer in either direction. Review the actual agreement and raise the proposed reuse with the original artist or rights holder. Where the commercial value is significant, obtain qualified legal advice before reproducing or adapting the work.
UAE legal references
The distinction between ownership of a physical artwork and rights to reproduce or reuse the creative work is addressed within the UAE copyright framework:
- UAE Ministry of Economy & Tourism: intellectual property legislation
- WIPO Lex: UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 38 of 2021 on Copyrights and Neighboring Rights
The exact rights for any commission depend on the agreement, so material rollout decisions should be legally reviewed where necessary.
Plan Multi-Site Rights Before the Rollout
If a brand expects to repeat an artistic concept across stores, offices, hospitality locations or developments, include that intention in the initial brief. Impact Murals can help define the creative adaptation and production model; formal rights language should be confirmed through the agreement and legal review where needed.
